The carving of an anthem - "So What"

E-mail PDF

Song Title: So What
Artist: P!nk (Pink)
Album: Funhouse (2008)
Genre: Pop Rock

Writer(s): Pink, Max Martin, Shellback
Producer(s): Max Martin

Finally, a chart topping hit that is bigger than all her previous effort. It had the combination of all the right elements. The verse is a cleverly crafted hook that has only ONE line, repeated all over and emphasized by the guitar line. It will have you singing in no time. While the chorus has this anthem-like feel (kinda like a heavier version of Girlfriend) that will have the crowd shouting and rocking everytime it hits. Coupled with the right words (lyrics), and you have this uplifting and independent-spirited break-up theme song.

Btw, did I mention that this song was a nominee of the Best Female Pop Vocal Performances at the 2009 Grammy?

Beyonce - If I were a boy

Finally, Beyonce is coming out with her third solo album. This time its gonna be a "double album" with 2 singles released simultaniously (from each album). Checked both of them out, but I love this one more.

The song "If I were a boy" instantly reminded me of Kelly Roland's previous efford called: "Stole", which carries a heavy social message. Of course, by looking at the title, it could just be absolutely gay (or rather les).

Great melody, nice lyrics, and very emotionally done vocals. As if that wasn't enough, what stole my heart was the music video, which was, to me, the diamond on top of a gold ring. It had a storyline, full plot with a twist at the end, which is what makes the "Wow" factor! Am amazed by it, and very touched by it. We have a hit!

I'm not gonna write you a love song!

"I'm not gonna write you a love song"

Quite impossible to miss out on this one if you tune in to any radio station lately.

Sara BareillesFrom the voice, you could conclude that she is the typical "singer songwriter" type (which is a polite way of saying that she is those "got brains and not pretty"kind). Checking out her photo proves that I'm not entirely *cough*wrong. I mean with the help of professional packaging, even Amy Winhouse can look decent!

We've seen a trend of singer-songwriters making big hits lately: From the era of guy "singer songwriters" like Daniel Powter, James Blunt, James Morrison to the recent female trends like Amy Winehouse, Duffy, Colbie Caillat and now Sara.

But they all face two common threat:

  1. One hit wonder
  2. Song writing formula that is too similar which would lead to the symptom of boring people to death with their vocals/songs (think Blunt... James Blunt)
